San Luca Sanctuary

The Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of San Luca is one of the most emblematic and identity defining places in Bologna. Overlooking the city from the top of Colle della Guardia, it is at once an urban landmark, a destination for pilgrimage, and the guardian of an artistic and spiritual heritage of extraordinary value.

The lighting design project was born from a careful process of listening and observation. The goal was not to add more light, but to restore balance and meaning to a complex space, enhancing its architecture, artworks, and liturgical dimension.

The large central area beneath the dome and the more intimate and solemn presbytery were interpreted as two complementary souls. The lighting accompanies their dialogue, unifying the spaces and gently guiding the gaze without ever imposing itself.

The intervention has allowed details that were previously less perceptible chapels, altarpieces, decorations, and gilded elements to emerge more clearly, restoring depth and legibility to the whole. The result is a welcoming atmosphere consistent with the identity of the sanctuary, a light that supports the rite, respects silence, and reveals the beauty that was already present.
